Password Requirements

Your password or passphrase must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum Length: 
    • At least 15 characters.
    • Does not have to be one word.
    • Think of a short phrase that means something to only you. see below.
  • Complexity:
    • Must contain at least one upper case letter.
    • Must contain at least one lower case letter.
    • Must contain at least one numeral.
    • Must contain at least one special character.
      • Example of special characters: !@#$%^&*()_+{}|:”<>?
  • History: 
    • You cannot reuse any of your previous 5 passwords.
  • Expiration: 
    • Passwords must be changed every 90 days.
  • Prohibited Information: 
    • Do not use your name, username, company name, or any easily guessable words.
  • Password Manager Recommended: 
    • Using a password manager is strongly encouraged to help you create and manage strong, unique passwords.

Make sure it is a strong password that will take at least 10 years crack or it will be rejected.

 

Creating a Strong Passphrase

  • Use Multiple, Unrelated Words:
    • Example: "fluffyPurpleElephantJumpsOverFence"
    • Avoid: "myFavoriteColorIsPurple" (easily guessable)
  • Vary Case (Requirements are at least one upper and one lower case letter):
    • "FluffyPurpleElephantJumpsOverFence" (better than all lowercase)
  • Add Numbers and Symbols (Required):
    • "FluffyP!rpleElephantJumps0verFence" (but don't overdo it)
  • Make it Personal (But Not Obvious):
    • Relate it to a hobby, a memory, or a unique phrase.
